 What are Opae Ula shrimp?

Opae Ula (Hawaiian red shrimp) are hardy, low-maintenance brackish water shrimp native to Hawaii. They are known for their long lifespan (up to 20 years!) and ability to thrive in closed ecosystems.

 Do I need to feed the shrimp or clean the water?

Nope! Our ecosystems are designed to be fully self-sustaining. The shrimp feed off the natural algae and biofilm that grow inside the sphere. No feeding or water changes are required—just enjoy the view!

Where should I place my ecosphere?

Place it in a well-lit room with indirect natural light or under gentle LED lighting. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause overheating and excess algae growth.

What temperature do they need?

Opae Ula thrive in temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C). Room temperature is typically perfect.

What type of water is used?

We use a special pre-mixed brackish water formula with marine-grade sea salt—ideal for Opae Ula. If you need to top off your ecosphere due to evaporation, only use distilled water to avoid altering the salinity.

Each order comes with:
• A hand-selected glass ecosphere
• Live Opae Ula shrimp (quantity depends on your order)

 How do I set up my ecosphere?

How long will the shrimp live?

Opae Ula are among the longest-living shrimp in the world. In a properly maintained ecosphere, they can live 10 to 20 years or more.

How are shrimp shipped safely?

We use insulated packaging and overnight or priority shipping methods to ensure your shrimp arrive healthy and stress-free. All shipments are tracked and packed with care.

Do you ship during winter or summer?

Yes, but we may delay shipping during extreme weather conditions to protect the shrimp. We also include thermal insulation or heat packs when needed.

Do you ship internationally?

We can ship almost anywhere in the world. If you live in a different country besides USA please email us at shrimpecosphere@gmail.com first to confirm that we can ship to your country.

What’s your return/refund policy?

Due to the live nature of our products, all sales are final. However, if there are any issues upon delivery (such as DOA shrimp), please contact us within 24 hours with a photo and we’ll make it right.

Are these safe for kids or classrooms?

Absolutely! Shrimp Ecospheres are great educational tools and make excellent low-maintenance pets for classrooms, offices, and homes.

Do I need a light?

A soft LED light can help stimulate algae growth for the shrimp to feed on, especially if you don’t have a naturally lit space. We offer LED light options with some of our kits.

What if the water gets cloudy or has algae?

Mild algae growth is natural and even beneficial. If it becomes excessive, you can gently scrape the glass with a soft tool. Never use soaps or chemicals.
