Two words. One shrimp.

Hawaiians named this animal for exactly what it is, and the name stuck long before science gave it a Latin one. If you've only ever heard "Opae Ula," here's what you're actually saying.

The Anchialine Pool

Rain seeps down through porous lava. Seawater pushes in underground from the coast. Where the two meet, in cracks and collapsed lava tubes just inland of the shore, you get a pool with no river feeding it and no surface link to the ocean — but a tide that rises and falls anyway. That's an anchialine pool. It's the only place Opae Ula have ever lived.

Why it matters: a pool with no inflow and no outflow has to recycle everything — nutrients, waste, oxygen. Opae Ula didn't just adapt to a closed system. They evolved inside one. That's the entire reason a sealed glass ecosphere works.
Built for extremes

A shrimp that shrugs at almost everything

Anchialine pools swing. Rain floods them fresh; evaporation and tide push them saltier than the open ocean. Anything living there has to handle the full range — and Opae Ula handle a range most aquatic animals can't come close to.

Grazes stone all day

Those tiny brush-tipped front claws scrape biofilm and microalgae off lava rock and glass. It's constant, methodical, and oddly satisfying to watch. This is also why they never need feeding — the food grows on the walls.

Changes color with mood

A relaxed, well-fed shrimp glows deep red. A stressed or newly shipped one can turn pale, almost translucent. Color isn't a health verdict — it's a mood ring. They typically color back up within days.

Breeds slowly, on its own terms

Females carry a small clutch of eggs under the tail — a "berried" female is a great sign. There's no free-swimming larval stage to lose, so babies hatch as miniature shrimp. Broods are small, and that's normal.

Where ours come from

Sourced with the pools in mind

Anchialine pools are fragile. Coastal development, groundwater pumping, and introduced fish that eat shrimp have wiped out many of them. A species that only lives in one kind of place can't afford careless harvesting.

  • Hawaii-based. We're on the Big Island, in the shrimp's home range — not reselling from a warehouse on the mainland.
  • Captive-bred where possible. Opae Ula reproduce in aquaculture, which takes pressure off wild pools.
  • Small numbers, long lives. Five shrimp that live twenty years is a fundamentally different ask than a tank restocked every season.
  • Live arrival guaranteed. If they don't make the trip, we replace them free.
The point of the sphere: it isn't a tank with the lid glued on. It's a small, deliberate copy of the pool they came from.
Common questions

Straight answers

Are Opae Ula endangered?
The species itself isn't listed as endangered, but its habitat is in trouble. Hawaii has lost a large share of its anchialine pools to development, and introduced fish like tilapia and mosquitofish eat shrimp out of the pools that remain. That's exactly why sourcing matters, and why captive breeding is the responsible path.
How is this different from a cherry shrimp or a brine shrimp?
Cherry shrimp are freshwater, live one to two years, need feeding, and need a filter. Brine shrimp (sea monkeys) live a few months. Opae Ula are brackish, live 20+ years, feed themselves off biofilm, and need no equipment at all. They're not a cheaper version of another pet — they're a different animal entirely.
Do they really never need to be fed?
Correct. Light drives algae growth, algae and biofilm feed the shrimp, and bacteria break down waste back into nutrients the algae use. It's the same loop that runs their wild pools. A pinch of spirulina once a month is optional, never required, and easy to overdo.
Why do my shrimp look pale, or hide?
Both are normal, especially in the first couple of weeks after shipping. Opae Ula pale out when stressed and color back up as they settle. They also naturally spend time tucked in rock crevices — that's where the biofilm is. Give it two weeks before you worry.
Can they escape or breed out of control?
No on both counts. The ecosphere is sealed, and Opae Ula breed slowly with small clutches. A stable ecosphere self-limits its population to what the algae can support — which is the whole idea.
What's the NASA connection people mention?
Sealed shrimp ecospheres grew directly out of closed-ecosystem research tied to NASA's work on life support for long-duration spaceflight — the question of whether a totally sealed system can keep an animal alive indefinitely. Opae Ula turned out to be an ideal test organism, for all the reasons on this page. The biology on your desk is the same biology.
